The Past Tense :-

Types of Past Tense : Definition :-

⭐⭐⭐ Past Indefinite Tense :- এই tense এ অতীত কালত বা পাৰ হৈ যোৱা সময়ত কোনো এটা কাম কৰা বা হোৱা বুজায়।

Structure :- sub.+ main verb(past form) + obj.+ ext. যেনে-

I went to market. মই বজাৰলৈ গৈছিলো।

The Sepoy Mutiny took place in 1857.

১৮৫৭ চনত চিপাহী বিদ্ৰোহ হৈছিল ।

She wrote a poem. তাই এটা কবিতা লিখিছিল ।

Past Indefinite Tense Rules :-

a) বাক্যত once upon a time, yesterday, ago, long ago, recently, last(week, month, year, Monday, Sunday, night etc.) থাকিলে, সেই বাক্যটো past indefinite tense ত লিখা হয় । যেনে-

He (leave) this place two hours ago.

= He left this place two hours ago.

তেওঁ দুই ঘন্টা আগতে ইয়াৰ পৰা গুচি গ'ল ।

Once upon a time, there (be) a king in Ayudhya.

= Once upon a time, there was a king in Ayudhya.
এসময়ত, অযোধ্যাত এজন ৰজা আছিল ।

⭐⭐⭐ (Note :- be = was/were in past tense)

I (give) you some money last Monday.

= I gave you some money last Monday.

যোৱা সোমবাৰে মই তোমাক অলপ টকা দিছিলো ।

Rajen also (read) this book yesterday.

= Rajen also read this book yesterday.

যোৱাকালি ৰাজেনেও এই কিতাপখন পঢ়িছিল ।

b) 'It is (It's) time' থকা বাক্যত past indefinite tense ব্যৱহাৰ কৰা হয় । যেনে-

It is time, we (do) the work.

= It is time, we did the work.

এতিয়া আমি কাম কৰাৰ সময় আহিল ।

It's time, you (prepare) for the examination.

= It's time, you prepared for the examination.
এতিয়া তোমালোকে পৰীক্ষাৰ বাবে সাজু হ'বৰ হ'ল ।

c) কোনো অবাস্তৱ কল্পনা কৰা ক্ষেত্ৰত বাক্যত wish আৰু be থাকিলে be ৰ ঠাইত সদায় were হয়, আনহাতে be ৰ পৰিৱৰ্তে অইন verb থাকিলে সেই verb ৰ past form হয় । যেনে-

I wish I (be) a bird.

= I wish I were a bird.

হায় যদি মই চৰাই হ'লোহেঁতেন ।

I wish I (be) a king.

= I wish I were a king.

হায় যদি মই ৰজা হ'লোহেঁতেন ।

I wish I (get) the job.

= I wish I got the job.

হায় যদি মই চাকৰিটো পালোহেঁতেন ।

d) কোনো অবাস্তৱ কল্পনা কৰা ক্ষেত্ৰত if, as if, as though আদিৰ পিছত be থাকিলে be ৰ পৰিৱৰ্তে were হয়, আনহাতে বেলেগ verb থাকিলে সেই verb ৰ past form হয় । যেনে-

He behaves as if he (know) me.

= He behaves as if he knew me.

তেওঁ এনেদৰে আচৰণ কৰিছে যেন তেওঁ মোক চিনি পায় ।

He walks as if he (be) a lame man.

= He walks as if he were a lame man.

তেওঁ এনেদৰে খোজ কাঢ়িছে যেন তেওঁ খোৰাহে ।

e) As soon as থকা বাক্যৰ এটা অংশ Past Indefinite Tense থাকিলে, সেই বাক্যৰ আনটো অংশও Past Indefinite Tense হয় । যেনে -

As soon as the teacher entered in the class, the students ( stand ) up.

= As soon as the teacher entered in the class, the students stood up.

শিক্ষকজন শ্ৰেণীত প্ৰবেশ কৰাৰ লগে লগে ছাত্ৰ-ছাত্ৰীসকল থিয় দিছিল ।

As soon as the tiger (see) the hunter, it ran away.

= As soon as the tiger saw the hunter, it ran
away.
বাঘে চিকাৰী জন দেখাৰ লগে লগে
পলাই গুচি গৈছিল ।

Past Continuous Tense :- এই tense এ অতীতৰ পাৰ হৈ যোৱা সময়ত কোনো এটা কাম কৰি থকা বা চলি থকা বুজায় ।

Structure :- sub.+ was/were + main verb + ing + obj.+ ext.
যেনে :-

He was waiting for me that day.
তেওঁ সিদিনা মোৰ বাবে ৰখি আছিল ।

We were running in field.
আমি পথাৰত দৌৰি আছিলো ।

   Past Continuous Tense Rule :-

a) বাক্যত when, while, as থাকিলে বাক্যটোৰ দুটা অংশ থাকে, তাৰে এটা অংশ past indefinite tense আৰু আনটো অংশ past continuous tense হয় । যেনে-

When the woman (cross) the road, a bus knocked her down.

= When the woman was crossing the road, a bus knocked her down.

ৰাস্তা পাৰ হৈ থাকোতে এখন বাছে মহিলাগৰাকীক খুন্দিয়াইছিল ।

I sang a song while I (walk) on the road.

= I sang a song while I was walking on the road.
ৰাস্তাৰে খোজকাঢ়ি থাকোতে মই এটা গীত গাইছিলো ।

As we were eating rice, the current (go ) off.

= As we were eating rice, the current went off.
আমি ভাত খাই থাকোতে কাৰেণ্ট গুছি গৈছিল ।

Past Perfect Tense :- এই tense এ অতীত কালতেই কোনো এটা কাম এইমাত্ৰ বা অলপ আগতে শেষ হৈ যোৱা বুজায় ।

Structure :- sub + had + main verb (past participle form) + obj + ext.
যেনে-

I had played football.

মই ফুটবল খেলিছিলো ।

We had arrived at the station.

আমি ষ্টেচনত উপস্থিত হৈছিলো।

    Past Perfect Tense Rule :-

a) বাক্যত before/after থাকিলে বাক্যটোৰ দুটা অংশ থাকে তাৰে এটা অংশ past indefinite আৰু আনটো অংশ past perfect tense হয় ।

Note :-

a) Past Perfect tense + before + past indefinite tense.

b) Past indefinite tense + after + Past Perfect tense.
যেনে-

The patient (die) before the doctor came.

= The patient had died before the doctor came.
ডাক্তৰ অহাৰ আগতে ৰোগীজন মৰিছিল ।

The train (leave) before we reached the station.

= The train had left before we reached the station.
আমি ষ্টেচন পোৱাৰ আগতেই ৰেলখন এৰিছিল ।

Rahul married after he (pass) the M.A.

= Rahul married after he had passed the M.A.
এম.এ পাছ কৰাৰ পিছত ৰাহুলে বিয়া কৰালে।

It (rain) after we (reach) home.

= It rained after we had reached home.
আমি ঘৰ পোৱাৰ পিছত বৰষুণ দিছিল ।

Past Perfect Continuous Tense :- এই tense এ অতীত কালতেই ঘটি যোৱা আন এটা কামৰ আগতে কোনো এটা কাম চলি থকা বুজায় ।

Structure :- sub + had + been + main verb + ing + obj + ext.

The students had been making a noise
before the teacher entered the class room.

শিক্ষক শ্ৰেণীত সোমোৱাৰ আগৰে পৰাই ছাত্ৰ-ছাত্ৰীবোৰে গণ্ডগোল কৰি আছিল ।

I had been sitting on the bench before he sat.
তেওঁ বহাৰ আগৰেপৰাই মই বেঞ্চখনত বহি আছিলো।
